In years past, encounters between wolf and Man were almost unheard of. But these days it seems you either know of someone who has seen Man, or you have yourself. Some areas once inhabited by wolves have been completely taken over by settlers. There are a few of us who still remember a time when wolves ruled the land unopposed.
Humans see wolves as dangerous pests, as lurking threats to both themselves and their animals. They have many methods of exterminating the predators (shooting, traps, poison, to name a few) and most of them will not turn down the chance to kill a wolf, even if it has done nothing and poses no threat to them.
We wolves fear man much more than he fears us. It is in our very nature. Instinct compels us to flee whenever we sense that humans are nearby.
Wolves cannot speak to humans, nor can they understand human speech, and so attempting to communicate with one is pointless. Your best chance of surviving an encounter with man is simply to run away. There are some who might call you a coward, but you will find that most will not blame you for running. Most wolves that have seen a human and lived to talk about it were just lucky enough to escape.
Many humans have animal companions, like horses or dogs, that accompany them on their excursions into the wild. These creatures are, perhaps, more dangerous to us wolves than their masters, as their keen senses can alert humans to our presence even when we are hidden from view.
Though it is possible for wolves and dogs to communicate with each other, neither species is usually willing to trust the other.
